Yukito Ayatsuji/Synopsis (2024)

Prologue: The Waterfall Spirit Lord's Waterfall[]

Ayatsuji confronts Kyōgoku at a waterfall and tells him that death will arrive to him and recalls the crimes Kyōgoku committed, but the government being unable to catch him due to the fact that he doesn't dirty his hands and uses other people to commit his crime. Ayatsuji then shows him the evidence, a coin, that Kyōgoku led the astrocity at the murder at the museum a while ago. He then explains how the murder take place. He then proceeds to tell Kyōgoku how he will die, a fatal drip from the falls will be the cause of his death. However, Kyōgoku claims that Ayatsuji will never defeat him and proceeds to fall down on the cliff himself. The military police who surrounds the area rushes to the scene. ^[1]

Chapter 1:The Old Ravine Cathedral / Noon / Sunny[]

Ayatsuji is seen wrapping up a murder case inside a cathedral. He then explains how the student, the victim, was killed and later on points out the killer. After the killer was revealed, Tsujimura arrives at the cathedral and reminds Ayatsuji not to assemble the suspects and name the criminals without their permission. Meanwhile, the killer tries to run away. ^[2] Just as the killer runs away, Ayatsuji points out to Tsujimura about him. The killer was successfully restrained by Tsujimura. Tsujimura proceeds to tell that she will be reporting him to the higher ups. In Ayatsuji's defense, he solve the murder faster than the military police. The killer tries to run away and tells that he will not get himself arrested. Ayatsuji then orders Tsujimura to let go of the killer, otherwise she will get caught to. Upon the release, the killer runs away and was killed by thefalling glass shards of the cathedral. Upon the incident, Ayatsuji claims it was a natural event and if someone's crime have been revealed, they are bound to die in an accident. ^[3]

Chapter 2: In Front of the Special Division Secret Base / Morning / Sunny[]

Ayatsuji greets Tsujimura good morning upon arriving at his office ^[4] Irritated that Ayatsuji is not paying attention to what she is saying, Tsujimura threatens him. As a response, Ayatsuji then offers a deal to treat each other with respect and asks Tsujmira to get him a cup of coffee. Tsujimura unconsciously does what Ayatsuji ask for and took long enough for her to notice. Just then, Tsujimura asks Ayatsuji to explain about yesterday's incident, ignoring the division and solved another crime. Ayatsuhi changes the subject by teasin Tsujimura and reveals what Tsujimura did before coming there. Bewildered, Tsujimura asks Ayatsuji how did he know any of it. Before finishing the question, Ayatsuji reveals that even though he have killed many in the past, he is free because the government finds his observation and his powers useful. ^[5]

Tsujimura is seen monitoring Ayatsuji while writing the report about yesterday's incident and hands it over to Tsujimura. Upon checking the report, Tsujimura notices the final section which contains the last words of the culprit. Tsujimura then wonders if there is another person who know the crime beforehand. Ayatsuji replies that the cuplrit may had an instigator who taught him everything. Tsujimura then restates the culprit's tracks before the murder. Upon quite thinking, Ayatsuji catches on the term "wells". He then stands up and goes to the basem*nt and thinks for a bit. He then tells Tsujimura about a gossip magazine he found in an alley three days ago, that has an article about a certain well - which describes it as evil. He then tells Tsujimura to get a work request from the division to find the well, if she wants to uncover the truth. ^[6]

Chapter 3: Marshland / Afternoon / Cloudy[]

Ayatsuji and Tsujimura arrive the well's location, after being briefed about the gathered information Tsujimura got by the reporter, Toriguchi. Upon seeing bamboo grass, purple stones at the well's exterior, Ayatsuji tells that it is a curse and orders to check the leaves for salt by licking them. Tsujimura then embarassingly proposes to just lab test it. After the checking the well once more, both of them leave the place.

During the drive, Tsujimura reassures that there is nothing to worry about and they'll find other leads. However, Ayatsuji tells her that it's their first and last lead and opens up the tale of the Dish Mansion and other tales wherein wells are seen as passageway between the spirit realm and the real world. Tsujimura asks if Ayatsuji thinks the well is haunted. Ayatsuji responds that the real culprit ste it up to make it look that way and orders Tsujimura to search the vicinity of the well the next day, and there's bound to be something, and looks forward to Tsujimura's performance. ^[7]

Ayatsuji encounters Kyōgoku who praises him for doing a good job on the cathedral case. Aytsuji then opens up about what Kyōgoku said at the waterfall - that the battle until that moment was only unveiling. Kyōgoku responds that after all the moment at the waterfall was his first taste of death. Kyōgoku then asks Ayatsuji if he heard about Mizuchi and tells him about it being a kind of water dwelling snake. Kyōgoku then makes a declaration that the next sacrifice will devoured by the Mizuchi and calls it a death threat. Ayatsusji gives Kyōgoku a warning that next time, he'll take much more care in killing him.

Just then, Kyōgoku welcomes the guests in his little game. Ayatsuji looks back and sees two people, not in their well state of thinking, carryin a gun. Ayatsuji tells them to drop the gun however the two people continues to speak and tells something about a person paying for their daughter's operation as long as they do what they're told. The man named Yōsuke and his wife Ritsuko point their guns at each other. Ayatsuji tries to stop them by telling that the person is just playing with them. However, Yōsuke slightly smiles at Ayatsuji telling that they know but it isn't a game for them. Just as Ayatsuji tries to rush over them, both of them pulled the trigger and died. After the death, Kyōgoku mocks Ayatsuji for not being able to decipher the person who paid for the surgeries. Kyōgoku then bids goodbye and disappears from sight as Ayatsuji is left devastated at the scene.^[8]

Ayatsuji arrives at a location and meets up with Tsujimura. He then receives a confidential document about the code the division found at the well. He then takes a look at the number sheets and deciphers it that the number points to an ISBN and they need to find an English language book. Upon searching the internet, Tsujimura tells that the book is called "The Selfish Gene". Ayatsuji then further describes what the book is about, a treatise on genes and memes. Just as they are discussing about it, a man named Asukai arrives. Ayatsuji greets the inspector and receives a pickled food from him. Ayatsuji then asks Tsujimura if the man has intel about Kyōgoku. Tsujimura explains that Asukai has been pursuing Kyōgoku cases for years and proceeds to ask what the military police found at the walls two months ago. Asukai then proceeds to tell them what happened and asks Ayatsuji how he could have survived. Ayatsuji replies that he doesn't know.

Asukai then decribes Kyōgoku not dyin as odd and recalls the Reigo Island incident five years ago. Just then Ayatsuji tells him that he want Asukai off the case and tells that he might be his next target. Asukai refutes back that the reason he is pursuin him is because he killed his partner, Yui and vows to kill him before Ayatsuji can.

Just then, a gas grenade is thrown at the place. The three run and manages escape the bullets being fired at them and safely go to a storage room. After escaping, Tsujimura glances at the opened window. However, Ayatsuji tells her to forget it as they have been surrounded on the outside too. Just then, Tsujimura notices Asukai bleeding but brushes it off and instead tells that they better get out of the place. Ayatsuji then stands up and tells that he has an idea. ^[9]

Ayatsuji then proposes the idea to escape through the door with the smoke as it has lesser units and instructs Asukai what to do for them to escape. Furthermore he tells Tsujimura that if she feels threatened, she doesn't need to hesitate and just kill them. ^[10]

Chapter 4: Department of Justice Main Building / Morning / Sunny[]

Ayatsuji is seen waiting for Tsujimura at the Department of Justice building, to give testimony for killing the special forces for anti-terrorism. He then comforts Tsujimura saying that all rookies makes mistakes and it is Kyōgoku's fault, him being the mastermind. He was then asked by Tsujimura if he thinks it would be better for him if he has no ability. Ayatsuji responds that it will take 10 years for him to answer the question and asks Tsujimura when her ability was awaken and tells her that her ability might something to do about the Reigo Island incident. Curious about her mother, Tsujimura asks Ayatsuji what did she look like to which Ayatsuji responds that he has no information regarding it. He then points out that Tsujimura joined the Special Division and asks if she wants revenge on the incident. ^[11]

After some time, they were approached by Sakash*ta. Ayatsuji asks Sakash*ta if he have read the report about what happened earlier to which he responds that he just read the sumamry of it. Ayatsuji is then offered to have a chat with Sakash*ta and follows him. However, they were stopped by Tsujimura claiming that Ayatsuji has nothing to do with the incident and it is her fault. After Sakash*ta and Tsujimura's conversation about the Special Division being necessary or not, Sakash*ta leaves. Just then, Ayatsuji stops him and reveals that Sakash*ta reading only the summary was a lie, which he can be used as a weapon against his opponent.

Ayatsuji then reveals that Sakash*ta is being manipluated to take down the Special Division, to which the latter denies. However, Ayatsuji further tells him that he must been restrained by Kyōgoku before and reveals that he used Ayatsuji to kill his rivals. Sakash*ta continues to deny it saying that the crimes of his rivals were judged. After revealing Sakash*ta's crimes, he then leaves. Ayatsuji then tells Tsujimura might be fired considering that it is to dismiss her and demand the Special Division tobear the responsbility for the recent brought up conversation. With this, Tsujimura chases after him and tries to drag him out of the elevator. Ayatsuji grabs her and pulls her out. However, the elevator had a power shortage and it fell, resulting to Sakash*ta being cut in half. Ayatsuji then recalls what Kyōgoku said about the Mizuchi. ^[12]

Ayatsuji explains the incident to Asukai upon arrival about the intentional murder of Sakash*ta and concludes that it must be Kyōgoku's work and he taught someone how to commit the perfect crime, however he further tells that the criminal must be acting on their own will. He then orders them to start the inspection and look through the CCTV to find the culprit.^[13]

Ayatsuji together with Tsujimura and Asukai check the CCTV at the building. After much checking, Ayatsuji discovers the Engineer being part of Kyōgoku's scheme, particularly him being a puppet of Kyōgoku. He reveals that he is the 18th murderer in the Reigo Island victim massacre. They then further check the footage which completely reveals his face and the objects he used to destroy the elevator. Ayatsuji then orders the staff to list all buildings within 6km radius with card verification on elevators since the Engineer will still kill after the previous incident. While the police leave to investigate and take care of the order. Tsujimura approaches Ayatsuji and ask him for her to participate at the mission as well. Ayatsuji responds that her responsbility is monitoring him not catching criminals. Wit the fact that the Engineer has something to do with his mother, Tsujimura insists. However, Ayatsuji insstead gives her a condition that he will help her about it if she can do anything he assigns. With Tsujimura away, Ayatsuji reveals to Asukai that he is the one who killed Tsujimura's mother. ^[14]
